Major UK Supermarket planning to Boycott Red Dead Redemption?

Published at 3:39 AM PST

Red Dead Redemption has done well so far, avoiding any bad pre-release media attention from groups against its content (there aren't any parental groups against drinking and riding, apparently), however as always tradition has held true, and it appears there is something serious going down in the UK. Gaming website Itchy Thumbs has learned that a major UK supermarket chain is planning to boycott the release of Red Dead Redemption, for reasons currently unknown. Staff have apparently been told not to offer customers the option of pre-ordering the title, as it will not be stocked.

Itchy Thumbs has chosen not to reveal the supermarket chains name, however members of the website have speculated to it being ASDA. They are the second-largest chain in the UK, so Red Dead Redemption not being stocked in their stores could become quite a significant issue. However, ASDA does list the game on its website for pre-order, including a Limited Edition version for each console. The online store is run by different sources according to Thumbs, and may not be affected by the boycott.

This is all, of course, just speculation. It could amount to nothing by the end of the week. If not, we'll have news for UK readers on what the story is behind the boycott - if that's what it is - sometime soon. Regardless, if you live in the UK and are planning on purchasing Redemption from ASDA, might be a good idea to get in contact with your local store and find out if they'll have it ready for you on Friday.
